DEBOUTONNE

Déboutonné I & II are textile paintings evoking a feeling of pleasure and satisfaction. Translated as unbuttoned, this work captures the quick moment of uncovering a body and its eroticism using exquisite handicraft embellishment beading and appliqué techniques. This work is influenced by the strong history of French decorative arts and ornamentation techniques. I playfully recreate textile moments from French Rococo narrative paintings like Fragonard’s abundant use of frilly, fluffy lace and sumptuous silk shawls and ribbons. Sensuality and romanticism come up against the crudeness of gay sexuality, here invoked by such material as dirty underwear, worn leather and metal hardware.
