September 8 - October 14 2023. Documentation by Guy l’Heureux. Buddies is an exhibition that celebrates and interrogates the gay bar as a space where queer bodies exist and resist. Théo Bignon presents a series of hand-embroidered works and objects where these sites are re-presented, tucked in speculative maps and other abstract compositions. Central to his work, the act of stitching is used as a tool for recollection as well as subversive decorative interventions. Throughout the gallery, a narrow drink rail evokes the liminal space where glasses lay, bodies lean and here, where artwork rests. The words "Buddy's" or "Buddies", painted on the gallery window or embroidered on the bar stools, are appropriated logos from North American gay bars that no longer exist. The lyrics engraved on the drink rails come from songs played ritualistically in these spaces. The lavender sprigs that fill the glasses are made using a 16th-century technique originating with French and Italian bead-workers, who refashioned misshapen beads from their workshops into delicate flowers sold to the bourgeoisie. Using these repetitive motifs, vanished references and gestures of transformation, the artist reflects on the ephemeral, joyful and precarious nature of queer nightlife and its fantasized, fragmented or forgotten memories. - Buddies est une exposition qui célèbre et interroge le bar gay comme espace où les corps queer existent et résistent. Parfait remède à l'individualisme de nos sociétés capitalistes et à la bigoterie latente de notre époque, ces bars fonctionnent pour plusieurs comme un espace aux possibilités multiples : un espace où l'on partage une expérience collective, où l'on danse, flirte et plus encore, mais aussi où l'on peut s'organiser et évoluer dans un environnement dépourvu d'attentes hétéronormatives. Théo Bignon y présente une série d'œuvres où ces espaces formatifs et leurs souvenirs y sont re-présentés, nichés dans des cartes spéculatives et autres compositions abstraites. Au cœur de ce travail, la broderie rend hommage en ravivant ces lieux et sert d’interventions décoratives subversives.
