men's briefs, hand-embroidered and peyote-stitched glass pearls and glass beads, elastic waistband, fringe
Accoutrement, the central piece of this body of work, combines two different formative objects/materials with which I had relationships of shame growing up as a young gay boy. The appeal of men’s underwear and their provocative packaging, alongside wearing and playing with family costume jewelry (faux pearls), were forbidden pleasures. Here they are pieced together to compose a new queer textile that corresponds to my own body measurements (my height and armspan). Exquisitely hand-embroidered beads and pearls act as an ornamental and structural elements throughout this work, either obstructing holes or joining surfaces with net structures, referencing the necessity for queer individuals to craft themselves.
